Spring Breezes

I live in Australia, in the southern hemisphere, so right now we are out of winter and mid-spring. It’s a beautiful time of year, the weather is mild and sunny, new life, be it baby birds or Jacaranda trees flowering (if you don’t know what these are click here), is all around us and I feel the need for change, renewal and growth. Do you feel it too?
Instead of refusing to feel this tug, I embrace it and allow myself to work with it, not against it. I’m not saying that you throw it all in, sell the house and car and move to a tropical island. I’m saying use this restless energy and channel it into working to achieve your goals.
This spring restlessness can hit us when we are bored, and things have become too static in one part of our lives, and this can sometimes spill over to our entire lives. I know that when the spring breezes blow with the smell of cut grass, I honestly want to pack it all in, move to the country and become a homesteader and homeschool our two kids. But do I really want to? Do I want to move away from family, friends, schools and a life we love? No. I’m just feeling the need for change, for more freedom in my life and for more time with my family.
What do I do instead?
I refocus. I look back at my dream life. This is the over-arching plan for what I want my life to be, and more than that, how I want my dream life to feel and how I want to feel in it. I have this written down in a notebook and any time I feel restless, bored or lost I revisit it to re-focus on what I’m working towards. I look at it in detail and remember the feeling I had when I first envisioned my dream life, I feel it again.
Not surprisingly my dream life has a lot of freedom in it and time with my family, which is again unsurprisingly what I’m craving right now. This means that I can focus on my dream life and the achievement of this, which will give me what I’m wanting and needing. This is a much better approach than being blown aimlessly in the wind trying to satisfy these wants through disjointed decisions and changes.
I look at the goals I’ve set in order to achieve this dream life. This is often where I realise that I’ve neglected some areas, or maybe even all areas. I love helping people define and achieve their goals, and I love doing this for myself, but I’m by no means perfect at it, we need to remember that in achieving goals imperfect action beats perfectionist procrastination every day. The lack of movement towards my dream life is actually what is making me feel restless, bored and just plain over it all.
I focus this restless energy, this need for change into achieving the goals I’ve set. The best part of this is that achieving your goals does create a change, so it helps with the feeling of restlessness and inertia. It also creates positive change, change that you know is leading you to the life you want. It isn’t just random change for the sake of change, change on a whim that may take you off the path you’re walking towards your dream life.
This restless energy is often exactly the energy you need to break through a barrier or a fear that has been holding you back. Holding you back from making big changes, taking big risks, backing yourself and seeing how much stronger, more determined and wiser you are than you ever realised. Use this spring energy for change to push through those fears and take big steps towards your dream life. If you don’t, you may make some rogue changes that seem less scary, but they don’t actually get you to the life you want.
Don’t let the spring breezes blow you off course, use this energy to take immediate and imperfect action to achieve your goals.

If you need help defining or pivoting your dream life and goals or you need support and encouragement along the way to face challenges, please feel free to book in for a goals coaching session. I would love to help you!
